*Join the students and staff of Southside in War, WV for their 2nd Second Annual Poker Run on Sunday, May 31st. In an effort to help fund an educational field trip to our nation’s capital, 100% of your entry fee will go towards our 70 students who will be making their first journey to Washington, D.C. We will meet and register at 10am before we kick off the ride. The poker run will start and finish at Southside K-8 in War, WV. After the miles of fun, we will return to the school where your $15 entry fee will land you a delicious meal. There will be prizes for best and worst hands, door prizes, 50/50 drawing, a cornhole tournament and more! You can preregister with any student in grade 6-8 who is attending the trip, or you may register the day of the ride. *The annual Bramwell Spring tour will be held Saturday, June 6th from 2pm-5pm and costs $15 per person. There will be several historic homes open for you to view as well as shopping, lunch, and a hospitality room at the Historic Depot replica. Home of the Coal Barons, come and hear the history behind each home you visit, plus listen to the rich history of the town presented by famed local historian, Betty Goins, prior to your tour. *On June 20th, West Virginia celebrates the anniversary of the creation of West Virginia as the 35th state. Jump Start, a volunteer group bringing new life to downtown Princeton, is sponsoring the celebration of West Virginia Day in the Dick Copeland Town Square from 2pm-8pm. Music will be provided by Valley Bluegrass and Barry Bowman. Re-enactors, Phoebe Belcher Clay, the first settler of West Virginia, Arthur Boreman, the first governor of West Virginia and a coal miner giving the history of the life of a West Virginia coal miner will be speaking. The WVU Mountaineer Mascot will be in attendance. Food will be available by Nona’s Italian Kitchen and the Mercer County Historical Society with free cupcakes at Almost Heaven Bakery. Virginia 4-H is now taking host family applications for hosting teenagers from abroad for the summer, as well as for the 2015-16 high school year.
